"ASSEMBLING A European Network of Monitoring Centers for Transport Infrastructures" is a research project in the   4th Research Framework Programme of the European Commission. The project is co-ordinated by MCRIT (Barcelona). Research partners are LT Consultants (Helsinki), INRETS (Paris), SYSTEMA (Athens), COMBIMARE (Rome), Delft University (Delft), SOFRES (Paris), WCMC (Cambridge), IWW (Karlsruhe) and Mkmetric (Karlsruhe). The duration of the project is from June 1997 to June 2000.

National 50 % of the research project is funded by The Ministry of Transport and Communication, Finnish Road Administration, Finnish Rail Administration and the Regional Councils of Southern Finland.

The main goal of ASSEMBLING research is to explore and apply methodologies and technologies to assemble heterogeneous transport related data and information sources and thus add European, national and local value:

  • On one hand, ASSEMBLING explores the use of recent developments in information technologies (new software, Internet...) to manage, harmonise and disseminate regional, field-oriented, and even informal databases, into an homogeneous European-wide transport information system (ETIS).

  • On the other hand, ASSEMBLING analyses institutional and financial strategies to create and sustain a network of field-oriented information sources (so called "Observatories" or "Monitoring Centers").

Thus, ASSEMBLING aims to a system of continuous analysis of information relevant to strategic transport planning and decision-making.
